Summer at Longwood

Longwood Gardens is the big shot among public gardens in the U.S.  They do everything with a big splash, sometimes literally.  It seems like it is the most expansive, showy, and probably the most expensive too.  I hadn't been in years, but when a friend and I were on the way to the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey, in mid August, we stopped.  Quite a contrast of environments, I know.

Here are some shots of a long border composed of dynamic color progressions -- blues merge to purple, then pink to reds, to oranges, yellows and on and on it went.

Photo above is my entry for the "Summer" themed Picture This contest at Gardening Gone Wild.

There's a lot more to see.  I'm only showing you a slice.

The meadow below is one of the newest features at Longwood Gardens.  It was just starting to come alive with bloom when we were there, but must be glorious now that it's October.  The bridge looks like a ship floating in the midst of it all. They do things big, don't they?

  1. I am planning a visit there next Saturday, and the meadow is on my "must see" list. This will be my 4th trip, but my first in the fall. And you are so right about them doing things big; I was overwhelmed by their orchid display on my last visit when the rest of the garden was covered in snow.

  2. Love seeing Longwood in the height of summer Sarah. I saw it this past spring but oh, the lushness of summer.

Thanks for entering the photo in the Gardening Gone Wild contest. I really like the point of view, peering over one border into another section of the garden. Very effective. I would like to see it cropped from the top - right down to the sunflowers and from the right to move those orange cannas off center. Then I would definitely darken the bottom. I do like looking past those flowers and path, but my eye keeps drifting toward them, instead of the wonderful border.

    1. Thanks for the feedback, Saxon. If only I knew how to darken the bottom. I know next to nothing about using photoshop and though I took a Light Room class, I haven't really used it. But, the cropping tips are helpful. That I can do. I have a hard time choosing photos after I've looked at them for a long time. I think if I'd gone with my first impression, I might have chosen a different image.... Thanks for visiting.
